Spotted this base-ass, not even a DX, facelifted EF (1990-91) hatch the other day. When new it had 75 hp and throttle body fuel injection. Other than a light spot of rust on the driver’s front quarter panel and some fading paint it was in remarkably decent shape, and appeare d to still be someone’s DD. Also, this style of Maryland plate went out of circulation in 2004.

CO has a plate type that ended in the 90s, saw a same gen EF (in the glorious tan/gold with tan vinyl interior) being driven by a lady in her 60s/70s
have seen it multiple times since on my daily commute.
I assume she bought it new, and has put a billion miles on it 15 miles at a time

Because it’s the cheapo Civic standard. Only a 4 speed, and didn’t come with anything from the factory. Not even a right hand mirror.
Damn good basic transportation but emphasis on the basic.

Did MDOT send new plates to everyone when they switched plate designs? PennDOT switched to white plates in 1999 and sent new plates to everyone who had blue plates to replace them. Today a few select special issue blue plates remain on the roads.

I want a 4 speed civic badly for no appropriate reason...

The original tri-color plates replaced both the blue plates and yellow plates.
I still see the 1987 Constitution plate every now and then:

All the nostalgia. This was mine. Her name was MJ, eventually Jane. Because she’s was a red head.

The DX got a 5th gear, about 20 more HP and a few other niceties. I’d rather have that, especially if you plan to do any highway driving. IIRC the 5th gear was overdrive and kept RPMs and noise down at highway speed ( Not completely sure about that though)

Rig ht, but I specifically want the 4 speed. I am not a rational man.

Lol fair enough. That was one of the cheapest cars you could buy in 1990. About $ 7k I think (?)

No, there are plenty of older plate styles out on people's cars. That white background with black letters and the state seal in the middle lasted from like the early 80s into the 00s, after 04 there were certain changes but still with that look. They're have been multiple other looks since then. You just get whatever the current style is when you get new plates.

None of that would stop someone from swapping in any number of higher powered Honda motors that drop in with little fuss though.

Or, at least sticking on some ugly Chinese wheels, a clip-on chrome exhaust tip, and painting only the most easily removable interior parts bright yellow.

Very true! These were less common than the DX though, and were often treated like disposable cars ( I worked at a Honda dealer in 90-92).

These are so fricking cool. I really wish less people knew how fun the older Hondas are.
